Freedom Of Speech

Man lives in a civil society which is ruled by a government of a particular state. To live in a civilized society one should have some basic rights to enjoy. Freedom of speech is one of those basic rights.

Every man has faculty of thinking of his own. He wants to express what he thinks. He can express his thoughts either verbally or in black and white. Delivering lectures in public or writing books or features are the means of expressing one’s thought.

In a civilized society freedom of thought and speech is very important. It is the means of protest against injustice and oppression prevailing in the society. It is the means of expression of what is true and what is false. What is right and what is wrong.

Great men of every age reformed the society by means of exercising the right of freedom of speech. They found out what was bad and harmful to the society and spoke against them, though the rulers of the time and the vested interests always tried to shut up their mouths. For example, Socrates, one of the ancient philosophers of ancient Greece, was sentenced to death for the propagation of truth.

Besides, Freedom of speech is one of the main features of democracy. For this, freedom of publication, freedom of newspapers, freedom of mass media and freedom of gathering and public meetings are the preconditions of democracy.

Without freedom of speech no society can develop anymore. People will be suppressed day by day and peace and prosperity will remain no more in the society in absence of it. A democratic government should ensure freedom of speech along with all other basic human rights.
